NYC Day Two Friday 28th September 2012

Day Two Friday

We got up very early due to the time difference and decided to walk down 5th Avenue towards the Flatiron Building, I had in mind to go to Eisenburg's Sandwich Shop for breakfast, we had a lovely breakfast of Bagel with Egg and Bacon and a Chocolate Egg Cream, great atmosphere, we sat on stools at the counter, I  have since found out you can go 'inside' this place on streetview!
Whilst we were in there it started to pour with rain and did not look like stopping any time soon, we had left the hotel in T-shirts so we had to go back to the hotel for dry clothes and waterproofs.

Carl was coming down with a cold and had a sore throat and temperature so he was not feeling too great. As it was raining hard we walked across Herald Square and went to look in Macy's until it had dried up a bit, loved the wooden escalators and saw some lovely clothes.

Afterwards decided to walk over to Grand Central Terminal via The New York Public Library and Bryant Park.  We sat in the food court for a while with drinks for a break as Carl was not feeling to great, then got down to exploring, saw the great ceiling, the clock, the whispering gallery which was being renovated so not working as far as we could tell, saw the food market which was an incredible array of lovely looking produce, lots of breads, pastries, cheese and spices and fruit,  also went into a Hudson News shop and got two 7 day unlimited Metrocards for use on subway and busses when we needed them.

We went outside and looked at the Chrysler Building and also looked for the rats I had read about that were above one of the entrances to GCT.

We then fetched some take out sandwiches and cheesecake from Juniors in the food court, they had an offer of free drinks so we had our first try of Mountain Dew, took this feast back to our hotel to eat, we should have bought one sandwich between us as they were very big! Unless you are very hungry share one then you can fit all the cheesecake in! We saved one half of our sandwiches and finished all the cheesecake, it was very nice and not how I had imagined it at all, now we rested as I was getting the cold also.

After a break we headed out again to go to the Rockefeller Center to go up to the observation deck, Top of the Rock, we found the ticket office and were advised that visibility was not good so decided to leave it for a better day, we had a look around the Rockefeller concourse shops and at St Patrick's Cathedral which was covered in scaffolding, this was a theme for our trip as a lot of places were having face lifts! We walked up Fifth Avenue looking in all the shop windows, went into the lobby of Trump Tower to see the waterfall, carried on up until we got to the Pulitzer fountain and then went in the food Court under the Plaza hotel for Tea and a Pistachio Macaron, first time I had tried these and they were nice but sweet.

After a failed hunt for some Squash for Carl to drink we gave up and got Coca Cola instead and
went back to our room and crashed out,  now both suffering badly with sore throats and colds, I was awake a lot that night and at 4.30am went across to our nearest Duane Reade to investigate medicine, got some throat spray and lozenges, came back and used the hotels free wifi to use my phone to google paracetamol to find out what it was called here, back to Duane Reade to buy some acetaminophen pills.
