NYC Day Eight Thursday 4th October 2012

Day 8 Thursday.

Today we packed a bag of dirty washing to take to a wash and fold place, I had googled and found one on 9th Avenue, we dropped off the washing and then walked to find The Highline, this is a park that has been created on a disused elevated railway. We walked along until we came to the exit nearest Chelsea market, a food market that is housed in the Nabisco Factory building, we had a look in the shops in the market and got a Red Velvet Cup Cake from Amy's Bread, we then returned to the Highline to eat the cupcake and finish walking the length of the park.

We came down off the Highline at the southern end and got on the subway at the 8th Avenue Station and got on the uptown C train to the 72nd street station, had a sit down in the Strawberry fields area of Central park by the Imagine mosaic and took a few photos when it cleared of a few tour groups, the weather was a bit better today so it was busy. Now to something that I had been looking forward too, I am a child at heart and had wanted to go to Alice's Tea Cup since a friend told me about it, also the idea of all synful food after my year of dieting sounded good, I was worried it would be too busy and we would not get in but it was fine, the service was excellent and all the food lovely, not cheap but we were on holiday and I thought it was totally worth it, we had a jabberwocky afternoon tea for two which included two types of sandwich, three different flavoured scones with preserves, assorted cookies and a chocolate mousse or lemon tart, and tea, they had a whole tea menu and it was the first decent cuppa since arriving in America. We did not finish everything and a scone and the cookies were wrapped up for us to take with us, the rest rooms here were very clean as well.

After Alice's we walked back to the park to see a bit more, we walked past Bethesda Fountain and the boating lake. Headed back to the hotel on the Subway, got out at 42nd Street so we could fetch the washing on the way back to our hotel, it was $11.50, and all lovely and clean and shrink wrapped.

Tonight we were going to a house concert at an apartment in the Upper West Side, We had reserved our tickets and the organiser had been very friendly and helpful, they had saved us a wonderfully soft and comfortable two seater sofa on the front row, just what we needed after all the walking we had done! It was hard not to go to sleep, luckily the Singer Songwriter Jonathan Byrd and his friend lady fiddle player and singer Chris Kokesh were enthralling and weaved great stories with their songs and music and kept us entertained, there was no air con in the apartment and it was very warm, lovely cold drinks were provided though.

The concert finished early and we decided as we were not too tired we would go for a ride on the Staten Island Ferry, we got the B or C down to Columbus Circle and changed to the 1 train to South Ferry, it was a very warm evening and the trip over was just what we needed to cool off, sat outside all the way, got off the ferry and hurried round to catch the next ferry back only to find it cancelled due to a security alert, so now had to wait until Midnight for a ferry back, we later saw a girl being led off by security to identify a bag she had left on board so that explained that! Very tired by the time we got back to the hotel but a lovely day.
