NYC Day Four Sunday 30th September

Day Four Sunday

Up Early and Subway to Union Square to get the L train to Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, Carl was feeling a bit better now. We were going to the Flea Market, got there early so got a croissant and drink from a deli and sat looking out over the East River until 10am opening time, looked around at all the stalls then headed back to the subway.

The weather was lovely so we headed out to Coney Island on the F train, this was a slow train but in some areas it was elevated so we had some great views of Brooklyn on the way.
At Coney Island we used the rest rooms at the station, a mistake and would not recommend but needs must, should have held on for cleaner, nicer ones on the boardwalk. Had a hot dog and fries from Nathan's and took them to the boardwalk to eat, they were OK although not much different to the ones from the carts. Walked towards the parachute jump and all the way to the end of the pier, watched some kids beat boxing and some little old ladies dancing along, Then at last it was time to go on the Wonderwheel! I could not wait and dragged Carl on the coloured swinging cars even though he looked green at the prospect, it was OK though and not as bad as he had feared, great views from the top, the weather for the whole of this day had been lovely so far, warm sunshine and blue skies.

After the ride on the Wonderwheel we walked slowly along the boardwalk in the direction of Brighton Beach, somewhere along we stopped at a van for an ice cream and got a soft serve chocolate flavour cone, something our Mr Whippy vans do not do in England. Carried on walking until it looked like the right place to turn off the boardwalk to explore Brighton Beach, the sky had got cloudy and black at this point but we had got it right this time and had waterproofs with us, we looked in a Russian book shop and then went in a Russian Café I needed the restrooms and a hot drink and a break to take some medicine, the menu was in Russian but also English on the flipside.

Feeling loads better after the break we got back on the subway and headed for Dumbo (Dumbo stands for Down Underneath the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), went to Clark Street station and walked from there down to the Fulton Ferry landing, it was very busy in Dumbo as there had been several events on that day including an Arts festival and the Smorgasburg, we could not fit any more sweet things in or would have tried some of the ice cream from the Brooklyn ice-cream factory, it looked nice but there was a long queue. We had a walk around and then went to Ignazios pizza, the pizza was nice and the service great. We sat in the window so had a view of the scaffolding covered Brooklyn Bridge.

After Pizza we walked over the Booklyn Bridge back to Manhattan just as the sun was setting, then got on the subway train back to Herald Square home, feet hurting bad but after a rest and a look out of the window at ESB we decided as the sky was clear now was the time to go up.

We had printed the tickets at home as they were not timed tickets, this made it easy and there was only a small line so it did not take long to get up. Wow what a view from the top, definitely do this at night, it was very cold at the top and we were glad we took jumpers with us even though it was warm at street level, Carl's cold was getting better but mine was a day behind his and I was feeling awful so went in out of the cold and looked at the view through the glass, when it was time to go down we chose a Christmas decoration souvenir from the gift shop, the only long line of the day and the service in here was not great, very slow and rude, be prepared to get shouted at a lot if you visit The ESB.  A very busy but great day.
