Day 7 Wednesday
I had devised a food tour of the Lower
East Side at home, I wanted to try lots of things and see a bit of
the area, we made a mistake of not sharing some of the things so we
could not fit in as many tasters as I would have liked and ended up
bringing some back to the room!
We started by heading to Grand Street
on the subway, the first place we were headed was Kossars Bialys, I
had never heard of a bialy until I started researching this trip, we
got one each and they were so stale they were almost in-edible, I can
see they would be a nice idea if fresh, did not finish these and
saved them for the birds in the next park. Next was Doughnut Plant,
we had an Orange Blossom and Cashew flavour and a Blackout flavour,
both cake style and very nice, these did not last long as they were
breakfast! Over the street now to The Pickle Guys, the staff here
were friendly although there was some mis communication as instead
of a small taster from here we ended up with pots of Garlic and
Pineapple and Okra Pickles as well as some spicy and sour regular
pickles too. We held onto the pickles until we had visited our next
stop which was Yonah Schimmels Knishery, a hot plain knish each
purchased (should have share one!) we headed to the nearest park to
try these with the pickles, it was all yummy although Carl thought a
potato pasty was a bit odd. very full up now and so eating tour was
finished a lot sooner than I had planned, I don't know how I thought
we would have fit all of it in though, easy to plan when you are at
home on a diet!
We had a tour booked at the Tenement
Museum at 1pm and it was only 9.30am and my itinerary had finished
early as there were only things that involve food on it, whoops. I
sat on a bench and checked the map and we just decided to walk and
explore, we walked along East Houston and down Mulberry Street all
the way to Chinatown, stopping for a coffee and Canoli (another one
ticked off the food to try list!) and a restroom. We found bloody
angle and Pell and Bayard Streets, I got a new jade colour glass
ring, and we tried bubble tea for the first time, took it into
Columbus park with us and listened to some lovely music from a
couple of gentlemen who were busking. I had wanted to try pork
dumplings but we had no appetite left for them, I did buy two small
custard tarts for later though, there were some very interesting
looking pastries in the Chinese Bakery.
Headed back
to the Lower East Side for the Tenement Museum tour, we had booked
the Hard Times tour, there are restrooms here as well if you need
them, also some in Columbus park were very clean. The tour was
fascinating and followed the story on from Mondays Ellis Island trip
well, I got a nice fold up souvenir shopping bag from the gift shop
too. As if we had not done enough walking already, after a small
break and our custard tarts we headed off towards Broadway and walked
down towards Canal street through the Soho shopping area, our feet
were too sore to enjoy this bit really but did think the buildings
looked interesting, had a look in Pearl River Mart and came out of
the door at the back onto a lovely cobbled street. We walked and
walked until we could not walk any more and sat in Albert
Capsouto Park until our feet recovered enough for us to
hobble to the Subway, we got the 1 train uptown to Times Square and
then the shuttle to Grand Central with the intention of getting a
picnic to take back to the hotel, while we were there we went into a
Hudson news to get another 7 day Metrocard each for when our first
ones ran out. The food court looked tasty and we ended up eating
there before walking back to the hotel, My cold was getting better
which was a relief, last time I flew with a cold I was not aware it
could cause problems and my eardrum burst, I was very worried about
this happening again and was planning to stock up on all kinds of
de-congestion medication.
